Ruwa, Zimbabwe — In a vibrant display of community spirit and social activism, Ruwa Town Council Mayor Michael Mataruka hosted the town’s first-ever Mayor’s Half Marathon this past Saturday — and didn’t just stand on the sidelines. He laced up his running shoes and joined the 21km race himself, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 2:19:11 and an average pace of 6:17/km.

Held under the theme “Running Against Drug Abuse,” the event featured three race categories — 21km, 10km, and 5km — attracting runners from all walks of life, including council officials, government representatives, private sector leaders, and members of civil society. The marathon was more than just a race; it was a rallying cry against the growing scourge of drug abuse threatening Zimbabwe’s youth.

“We are losing too many young lives to drugs. This marathon is our way of saying enough is enough. We must act now, and we must act together. Through sport, we are building resilience, awareness, and unity,” Mayor Mataruka told SportBrief.

Beyond the race, the event transformed Ruwa into a hub of celebration and community engagement. Local primary school teams thrilled spectators with spirited football matches, while Zorro led an electrifying Zumba dance session that had the crowd moving in unison.

Public and private institutions showcased their products and services at colorful exhibition stands, offering everything from educational materials to wellness products. Free health checks were available throughout the day, allowing attendees to assess their fitness and receive guidance on healthy living.

“I came for the 5km walk, but I stayed for the Zumba and the health check. It’s inspiring to see our mayor taking such a bold stand against drugs. This was more than an event — it was a wake-up call,” a Ruwa resident Tariro Mudzviti told SportBrief.

The Mayor’s Half Marathon was not just a sporting event — it was a strategic intervention aligned with national efforts to combat drug abuse. With Zimbabwe facing a surge in substance use among young people, initiatives like this are crucial in raising awareness and promoting healthier alternatives.

“We are proud to support this initiative. It’s a model for how local government can lead from the front — not just in policy, but in action,” said a visiting councilor.

As the sun set over Ruwa, the message was clear: the fight against drug abuse requires collective effort, and through events like this, communities can reclaim their future — one step, one dance, one heartbeat at a time.

A bold 23-day walkathon from Beitbridge to Harare has been launched under the banner “Together We Rise, United We Heal”, uniting corporate strength and grassroots resilience in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

The initiative, spearheaded by NetOne and Heal Us Zimbabwe, began on June 27 and will run until July 19, covering more than 500 kilometres across the country. Far more than a march, organisers say it is a national call to action against a crisis that has devastated families, schools, and workplaces.

Statistics show drug use among young Zimbabweans rose from 43% in 2017 to over 57% by 2019, prompting President Emmerson Mnangagwa to declare the situation a national emergency. NetOne, Zimbabwe’s state-owned mobile operator, has responded with a sustained campaign that places its partnership with Heal Us Zimbabwe at the centre.

Speaking ahead of the launch, NetOne Group Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Raphael Mushanawani, said: “We are running towards a future where our youth reject substance abuse. As NetOne, we are honoured to play a central role in this revolution. But we cannot do it alone. Heal Us Zimbabwe brings the lived experience, the frontline truth, and the human face of recovery. That is why this partnership matters.”

Heal Us Zimbabwe founder Columbus Tapiwa Mushore, himself a former addict, has dedicated his organisation to reaching young people struggling with addiction. His collaboration with NetOne has transformed the walkathon into a movement that blends awareness with practical support. Along the route, daily marches are accompanied by counselling sessions, testimonies from survivors, and community dialogues.

Engineer Mushanawani highlighted the synergy: “NetOne believes that connectivity is not only about technology but also about connecting people to opportunities, hope and a better future. Heal Us Zimbabwe connects us to the ground reality. Our job is to amplify that voice across our entire network—voice, data, mobile money, and internet services.”

Beyond digital messaging, the campaign has reached schools, youth centres, and communities, breaking stigma and offering rehabilitation pathways. It also ties into Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, with Mushanawani stressing that a healthy, productive youth population is essential for national development.

Now on Day 4 of the march, walkers have been met with encouragement, water, and support from communities along the way. Organisers say this reflects the recovery journey itself—no one overcomes addiction alone.

The campaign’s closing call captures its spirit: “Your future is in your hands. Say No to Drugs. Say Yes to Life.” For NetOne and Heal Us Zimbabwe, those words are not just a slogan but a covenant, signed with every step from Beitbridge to Harare.

Harare – Preparations are in full swing for the 2026 Bonaqua Africa Triathlon Cup and Troutbeck Multisport Festival, set to take place on 14 March 2026 at the iconic Troutbeck Resort. This year marks Bonaqua’s 12th consecutive year as the title sponsor of Zimbabwe’s flagship triathlon event, underscoring its long-term commitment to the growth of the sport.

Organisers highlighted that Bonaqua’s sponsorship has been pivotal in driving athlete development, inspiring first-time participants, and positioning Zimbabwe as a serious sporting destination. Building on this legacy, the 2026 edition promises renewed energy and an expanded vision for what Zimbabwean sport can achieve.

In a significant development, Schweppes Zimbabwe has announced the introduction of Powerade to the local market. Powerade, a next-generation sports drink, is engineered to fuel athletes before, during, and after competition. Together, Bonaqua and Powerade form a complete performance hydration portfolio—combining pure, trusted hydration with sport-specific fuel tailored to the demands of endurance competition.

“The ambition is clear: to build the most innovative and connected sports hydration portfolio in the market, serving every athlete—from elite competitors to weekend warriors—with exactly what their body needs to perform,” organisers said.

The Bonaqua Africa Triathlon Cup, sanctioned by Africa Triathlon and World Triathlon, will award world-ranking points that contribute to Olympic qualification for elite athletes.

Beyond the Africa Cup races, the event will be staged as the Bonaqua Troutbeck Multisport Festival, featuring African Cross-Triathlon (Off-Road) Championship, Cimas Corporate Triathlon Challenge, Zimbabwe Triathlon Championships, Tri-Kidz and Trisports races, Aquathlon (run-swim-run) and Open Water Swim.

At a media briefing in Harare on Tuesday, organisers confirmed that preparations include expanded race categories, enhanced athlete safety and wellness protocols, and increased community participation.

Triathlon Zimbabwe emphasised that Bonaqua’s long-term sponsorship has been central to the growth of triathlon in the country, while also boosting sports tourism. As part of the Coca-Cola system, Bonaqua continues to champion hydration as a cornerstone of endurance performance. The addition of Powerade further reinforces the system’s ambition to deliver the most innovative sports hydration solutions to Zimbabwean athletes.

The organisers extended gratitude to event partners, including African Sun, CFAO Motors, Cimas, EcoCash, and Rooneys, for their continued support.
