Addressing the media, representing Chapungu FC acting chief executive Wing Commander  S Ncube was Air Commodore Selebale Masera who thanked Netone for coming to their rescue at the nick of time.

“You responded after we extended our plea to the entire corporate world to say please can you come and assist us in order for us to rise to a certain level and you came in at the right time with a huge figure,” he said.

NetOne in February this year unveiled a sponsorship package of over $1 million to Zimbabwe’s biggest teams Dynamos, Highlanders and Caps United and now has come to the aid of the Gweru based premier soccer league team.

“We are committed to playing our role in ensuring that Chapungu FC goes onto the field to showcase their talent and skills.

“To that cause NetOne is sponsoring Chapungu to the tune of $80 000,” NetOne chief executive Lazarus Muchenje told journalists at a press conference.

He also said that sponsoring football teams in Zimbabwe is part of their corporate social responsibility programmes.

“We are taking long term views to all our sponsorships. We  are taking a three year view to five year view to sport sponsorships.

“There will announcements soon because we have to talk to all the clubs that we are sponsoring. When that’s done we will come back at you.

“But sufficing to say, we are taking a long term view not a transactional relationship which is this year we are giving this money and next year they are asking from other people. We are sitting with Chapungu like every other club to say what your three year goal which is self-sustainable is. And how can we help to attain your goal. So you will see something next year,” said Mr Muchenje.
