The campaign, an initiative by Unilever through their Shield brand which partnered with Chelsea football is aimed at promoting football at a grassroots level by offering youths between the ages of 18-25years the opportunity to showcase their soccer talent.

The partnership will see one lucky Zimbabwean joining other young Africans to form a team of Africa XI that will get an opportunity of a lifetime to play against the Chelsea Legends in London.

“The Bulawayo trials were very successful. We were surprised at the levels of talent we saw at Gifford. It showed us that this campaign is a worthy cause as we saw there is so much untapped talent amongst the youth of this country and we are glad we can provide a platform that opens the very necessary avenues for youths to exploit their talents,” said Susan Luneta, Shield Brand Manager.

“All is now set for the Harare trials and we look forward to a larger turn out. So far we have received an overwhelming response with more than 2000 entries received on our WhatsApp and SMS platforms over the last few weeks. Those who have not yet entered the competition can still come through to Alex Sports Club on Saturday at 7:30 AM provided they have a Shield deodorant product with them,” Luneta added.

The try-outs are administered by four local football coaches, who include former Warriors coach, Kalisto Pasuwa, Former Highlanders Coach, Cosmas ‘Tsano’ Zulu, former Dynamos midfielder, Naison Mchekela and former Caps United forward, Alois Bunjira.

“We had an exciting event in Bulawayo. The youths who came showed a lot of football zeal. We are very proud to be part of this campaign. This is exactly what Zimbabwean football needs to develop its youth,” said Callisto Pasuwa as he praised campaign at the Bulawayo trials.

“Not only does this open an opportunity for youth to realise their dreams, but that lucky youth will gain exposure and learn a lot from playing alongside other Africans when they take on the Chelsea Legends.”

A total of 15 youths will be selected from the Harare trials to join the Bulawayo group of 15.

The final 30 players will then go to a one-week boot camp session in July. After the boot camp, 3 Chelsea Coaches will be coming to Harare on the 25th of July to pick the final winner who will go to Cobham in the UK to train and play against Chelsea legends.

The competition which was launched on the 4th of April in Harare, is open to Zimbabwean citizens aged 18-25 years.

To enter, one has to purchase any Shield product and send the barcode to the USSD *33366# or send a picture of the receipt on WhatsApp number 0777714200.
