The continental football mother board, CAF, has shown trust in the local referees by deploying them to a more demanding yet respectable assignment.
Six local referees have been given a task to prove their mettle in the football refereeing industry after CAF handed them three CAF Champions league matches to officiate.
Top Zimbabwean referee Norman Matemera has been mandated to overseer CAF Champions League match between Zanaco of Zambia and Swazi side Mbabane Swallows with the assistance of Thomas Kusosa, Luckson Mhara and Nomore Masundire.
The Zambian team will host the Swazi team on the 7th of March 2018.
The controversial Kusosa, Mhara and Masundire will act in the capacity of first, second and fourth assistant referee in that order.
Revered referees Felix Tangawarima and Gladmore Muzambi have been appointed match commissioners for Bidvest Wits (South Africa) vs Club Desportivo de Agosto (Angola) and Uniao Dersportivo (Mozambique) vs TP Mazembe (DRC) respectively.
Meanwhile, Gladmore Muzambi who is the local referee committee chairman has told the Herald that they have set up a committee of elite referees to develop the local match officials.
“We have done a lot to improve our referees, there are a lot of refresher courses we always do to improve them,’’ he said.
“The final list of the officials that will be allowed to take charge of games will be really good ones and I am confident they will do the job very well.
“We have set up a panel of elite referees this year that will be assessing the work of referees every fortnight to help the officials improve.
“This time we are very strict, weak performers will not be allowed to continue and we want the very best to take charge of our games.’’
Apparently local Match officials have been under the spotlight on allegations of being either incompetent or biased, leading to a number of abandoned matches.
Some coaches have complained over the years but their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
