Zimbabwean swimming legend, Kirsty Coventry, recently landed a top post in the Olympics committee after she was elected the President of the International Olympic Committee Athletes Commission.
The retired international swimmer may have hung up her swimming costume, but she is still as ambitious as ever on the diplomatic front as she continues to hoist the Zimbabwean flag high if this latest appointment is anything to go by.
And the Sports and Recreation Commission acting director general Joseph Muchechetere was quick to commend Kirsty on her milestone achievement via a press statement released recently.
“The Sports and Recreation Commission joins the nation in congratulating Dr Kirsty Coventry on her election as the President of the International Olympic Committee Athletes Commission is a testimony that she an extremely capable and level headed leader.”
“Kirsty is no doubt an accomplished Olympian with 7 Olympic Medals won in 2004 and 2008 Athen and Beijing Olympics respectively. To this end, we have no doubt that she will discharge her duties with absolute distinction and honour.”
The SRC added that Kirsty’s appointment will help to enhance Zimbabwe’s image as a nation that strives to excel in promoting sport, with the Olympic gold medalist also holding the position of the president of the local Olympics Committee.
“As SRC we are thrilled that Dr Kirsty Coventry is playing that role at an international level thus setting us on a higher pedestal as a sporting nation and a safe tourist destination. It is also through her interaction at that level that we believe that the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee will be able to tap into her vast knowledge and exposure for the betterment of our sport,” the statement concluded.
For many who thought they had heard the last of Kirsty on the international scene after she retired from swimming, we might as well think again. The sky definitely appears not to be the limit for the legendary sportswoman as she continues to soar through the clouds, flying the nation’s flag and inspiring many of us Zimbabweans alike.
