Zimbabwean number one Benjamin Lock claimed a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Turkish number 2 Altug Celikbilekin to give the hosts a slender lead in the two day Davis Cup Euro-Africa Zone Group II tie which got underway today.
Lock, ranked 462 in the world came into the match as a bit of an underdog against Altug who is ranked 425th. But that did not deter the Zimbabwean as he took the first set 6-4.
Altug fired back immediately, ruthlessly dispatching the local player 6-1 to level matters as he looked to upset lock at his home turf.
However, Lock was having none of that as he recovered from that second set mauling to take the last set 6-3 and earn victory for the hosts and give Zimbabwe a 1 nil lead in the encounter.
The hosts were not done there as number two Takanyi Garanganga also claimed a win against Turkey’s number one IIkel to give Zimbabwe a 2 nil lead.
Tomorrow the two nations will now head into the decisive doubles category with the eventual winner of the match progressing to the second round towards promotion into Group One while the loser will go to the relegation play offs.
