Done deal: Aubameyang joins arsenal in club-record fee

Arsenal have completed the £56million signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borrussia Dortmund

By Sports Reporter

The Gabon striker has agreed a three-and-a-half year deal at the Emirates Stadium after agreeing a club-record fee with Dortmund that eclipses the £52.7m Arsenal spent on Alexandre Lacazette last summer.

Borussia Dortmund confirmed the transfer in a statement to their shareholder, with sporting director Michael Zorc saying: “Apart from the unpleasant events of recent weeks, we like to remember that the story of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at BVB for more than four years was a single success story.

“He has done great things for Borussia Dortmund at this time, scored many important goals and is part of the team that brought the DFB Cup to Dortmund in 2017. We wish Pierre-Emerick all the best for his future at Arsenal. “

Aubameyang arrives in north London with a formidable goalscoring reputation, having scored 100 goals in 119 appearances for Dortmund since the start of the 2015-16 season.

At the Emirates Aubameyang will once more strike up his partnership with former Dortmund team-mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who joined earlier this month as part of the deal that took Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United.

The 29-year-old is now likely to rival Lacazette for a starting spot in the Arsenal line-up, unless Arsene Wenger opts to break with his recent tactical habits to field two strikers up front.

Aubameyang’s arrival will see Olivier Giroud depart Arsenal to join Chelsea, with the Blues sending Michy Batshuayi to Dortmund on loan. Evening Standard
