Guardiola coming to Zimbabwe

The current Manchester City boss is set to grace the country along with Brazilian icon Rivaldo as part of the Barcelona legends team that will play an exhibition match with the national football team.

It is exciting times ahead for football fans in the country if the latest developments are anything to go by.

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has announced the impending arrival of Barcelona legend Rivaldo as part of promotional efforts for a match between the Warriors and Barcelona legends, at a press conference held on Monday morning in the Ministry offices.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Recreation Benson Dube confirmed the development, adding that Rivaldo is set to arrive today (Monday) at 4:30pm aboard the South African Airways.

“The Ministry of Sport and Recreation invited Mr Rivaldo Vitor Borba Ferrera in the country who is coming in as part of the promotion of a match to be played by Zimbabwe Warrior and the Barcelona legends. The purpose of the visit is to pay courtesy calls to the government of Zimbabwe in preparation for the proposed matches,” said Dube.

He explained that the visit was part of efforts made by the ministry to promote the country’s tourism front through sport tourism.

“The proposed match is in line with the Ministry of Sport and Recreation policy guidelines on the promotion of sport diplomacy and sport tourism for the benefit of the country.”

Dube also went on to add that a whole host of household names in European football are set to take part in the match scheduled for the first week of November this year.

“The likes of Ronaldinho, Ronald Koeman, Frank De Boer, Carles Puyol, Pep Guardiola, Samuel Eto’o just to mention a few are expected to take part in the match. Already in the country is Mr Rayco Garcia who will be here doing all the necessary arrangements ahead of the match.”

News of this development is likely to generate excitement among football fanatics in the country as it will afford them a rare chance to watch their yester-year idols perform in the country.

However, the permanent secretary was quick to stress that these football celebrities have not yet confirmed their attendance and that Rivaldo will give a further update in regards to the stars that are actually coming to the country.
