The Brazilians, as Sundowns are known by their legions of fans, got off to a perfect start as they broke the deadlock after Hlompho Kekana and Khama Billiat combined excellently two minutes into the game.
Billiat picked a long ball from Kekana before he beat his marker inside the Platinum box, firing past goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela to make it 1:0 in favour of former African Champions.
Billiat who was in scintillating form caused havoc in the Dikwena defence together with his partner Percy Tau, with the duo combining perfectly well in the opposition’s half as they looked to double Sundowns lead.
The Zimbabwe international, Billiat, had a chance to grab his brace in the 41st minute after he was released in behind the Stars defense, but this time he was denied by Mzimela from close range.
To confirm he was in it for a win, the former Ajax Cape Town winger was unstoppable as he went on to beat two opponent’s defenders two minutes later, forcing the goal minder into a diving save.
In a bid to contain the terrorizing Billiat, Stars Coach Roger de Sa made the first change of the match just before the second half. Katlego Otladisa came in for Sibongakonke Mbatha as the hosts looked to level matters.
However, Billiat continued with his skill and pace that gave the opponents a torrid time. The goal keeper continued to make crucial saves for his side to contain the marauding Billiat-inspired team.
Sundowns were forced to make a substitution in the 68th minute as Mabunda went down injured and was replaced by defender Thabo Nthethe, who was played as a defensive midfielder.
With all the pressure exerted by Sundowns, Stars managed to contain the visitors in the remaining minutes. The game eventually ended one nil in favour of Sundowns courtesy of Billiats solitary strike.
