Barcelona have been dealt a heavy blow as news coming out of Camp Nou suggest that there are set to be without their club record signing for close to four months.
The 20-year-old France forward was making his first La Liga start when he pulled up in the 29th minute in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Getafe.
And the £135m signing was flown to Finland where he underwent an operation after the match. However, Barcelona have confirmed that the forward has had a successful operation although he is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Barca said Dembele was “successfully operated on to repair a ruptured biceps femoris in his left leg”.
After Neymar left for Paris Saint-Germain for €222 million, Barca used some of the money to sign Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, with the former Rennes forward replacing Luis Suarez as the club’s most expensive ever signing.
Barca paid an initial fee of €105m for Dembele, although that could eventually increase to €145m with add-ons.
Dembele made his debut for Barca as a substitute in last weekend’s Catalan derby win over Espanyol, setting up the fifth goal for Luis Suarez.
Barca boss Ernesto Valverde then handed him his first start in the Champions League victory over Juventus in midweek.
