Speaking at a press conference held at the Fine and Country offices in Alexandria Park, the property company CEO Karen Nyenga said that they had always been interested in supporting the sport of polo from as far back as 2015.
“We opened up our doors (to supporting polo) in October 2015 and even from the beginning we had always wanted to be affiliated to a very good polo sporting game and also a very good brand. Unfortunately, we missed last year’s event, but we’re looking forward to the event in 2017.” She said.
The tournament which is held annually will this year take place at the Bushman Rock Polo Club, beginning on the 30th of June and ending on the 1st of July this year.
Polo, is a sport played with four pony and rider combinations on each side with each team consisting of four mounted players.
The sport has been played in Zimbabwe since the late 1800’s with one of the annual tournaments on the polo calendar, the Carnival Cup, deemed to be the oldest trophy in organised sport in the country. Although the game has been around for such a long time, its growth in the country has been somewhat limited.
And Bushman Rock Safaris managing director Jonathan Passaportis was quick to acknowledge the relatively small development of the sport.
“The Ambassadors Cup is presented every year by the British Business Association in Zimbabwe. This year we are teaming up with Fine and Country in what will be the second edition of the event (having started last year).”
“Historically, polo has not been a well-supported sport in Zimbabwe and hence our efforts are to ensure that we change that.”
Passaportis also added that the nature of the sport, which requires the use of multiple horses, makes it an expensive sport and hence that has been a limiting factor in the development of the game.
The Ambassadors Cup will consist of four teams which are namely the Fine and Country Eland, the Safeguard Sables, the Barclays Buffalos and the Fine and Country Kudu that will do battle in the knockout stages on 30 June with the winners progressing to the finals on the 1st of July.
