Portugal and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who is well-known for excessive celebrations, has now revealed why he did not celebrate on the pitch after Portugal’s win over Croatia.
The Portuguese assisted the 117th minute winner scored by Ricardo Quaresma, helping his team book their quarter-final ticket at this year’s European Championship.
However, instead of celebrating with his Portugal colleagues after the final whistle, Ronaldo was seen comforting his Los Blancos teammate Luka Modric, who was in tears.
“Of course, I am happy that we beat Croatia,” he explained, as quoted by Radio Sarajevo.
“However, I couldn’t celebrate on the field because my brother Luka Modric was crying.
“It is my duty to comfort my brother.”
Portugal reached the last eight of the tournament without winning any of their previous four games after 90 minutes.
They will now face Poland in the quarter-final on Thursday, and will meet either Wales or Belgium if they make it to the semi-finals.
