The match started on a high tempo with the visitors taking the stage to announce their arrival as early as the 3rd minute after a neat exchange of passes between youngster Kudzai Nyamupfukudza and attacking midfielder Joel Ngodzo before releasing a pass to Leonard Tsipa who unleashed a thunder bolt, forcing Makwiyana to punch it out for a corner kick.
The match progressed with the home team slowly crawling in to the game but United continued to enjoy a lion’s share of possession, with Nyamupfukudza, Ngodzo, and Amidu dictating the proceedings in the middle of the park.
Muchambo, who was having a holiday in between the posts, was awakened by a hard low shot from Madamombe in the 5th minute after a defensive blunder by Makatuka and Mudzambwa. Muchammbo came to the rescue of the duo’s defensive errors.
Makepekepe grabbed an early lead eight minutes into the game when Simba Nhivi’s effort evaded the goalkeeper for a goal.
With attack after another from United who had gathered all the confidence, it was now a Caps United versus Makwiyana affair as the former was camped in the later’s half, showing clearly their intentions to collect all possible points from the match.
A moment of brilliance for Hardlife Zvirekwi came on the 20th minute after he roasted his markers leaving them for dead, sending a handful of Makepekepe supporters to their toes in applause of the skillful show. Amidu’s shot on target was parried by Makwiyana for a corner kick.
Joel Ngodzo had his moment as well but could not do much in the 24th minute after he was hacked down to reward the visitors a free kick, but Tsipa could not justify the finish.
Simba Nhivi who was enjoying a superb game, was found wanting after failing to convert a glorious chance that was easier to score than to miss.
With 35 minutes on the clock, United continued to pile pressure and the hosts could not hold it anymore after their midfield was broke loose by rookie Nyamupfukudza connecting to Abbas Amidu who wasted no chance but buried it home to double the lead for Makepekepe.
Game continued with United enjoying top form, and their opponents could only avoid further damage, as their hopes of reducing the arrears were continuously being thwarted at the conjested midfield.
Mutare City through Madamombe, had their moment of brilliance but the ever alert Jorum Muchambo had an easy task.
With about 12 minutes on the clock before the final whistle, Cabby Kapamha was introduced, and veteran Tsipa was relegated to the bench, a move that almost paid more dividends for the visitors as the former did not disappoint.
United’s two goal were enough to propel them to the pole position.
