Minister of Sport and Recreational Makhosini Hlongwane has moved in to allay Prophetic and Healing Deliverance leader Prophet Walter Magaya’s fears of unaccountability over his donations to sport in the country.
The PHD leader revealed that he contemplated pulling out of sport after being frustrated by some unruly elements which he refused to divulge, a source revealed.
Magaya has on several occasions bailed out national teams financially to fulfill their assignments. But things came to a standstill when ZIFA, under then Cuthbert Dube misused the funds meant for use by the senior men national team.
Prior to the Warriors Cosafa cup participation in South Africa last year, prophet Magaya handed the ZIFA secretariat a whooping R650 000 but the money hardly made its way to the players not the technical staff as per arrangement.
The prophet couldn’t hide his disappointment towards the association’s misappropriate of funds. Since then Magaya had not played any role in supporting the national team.
According to the report, Magaya could not confirm the reasons why he had since stopped supporting sport in the country.
But after meeting the minister who was on tour of his Waterfall stadium, Magaya said he would renew his love with sport in a big way.
Magaya was quoted saying the minister’s visit was a special one as he had come to revive things that had fallen apart.
“It’s a special visit for the minister of sport and we appreciate. We received him. He has come to revive things that had fallen apart. I think it came to his attention that I am no longer that much active in sport,” he said.
The prominent prophet said he is now back and will continue supporting sport. On the other hand the minister pledged his support for the PHD leader.
“Prophet Walter Magaya is an important stakeholder in as far as sports and recreation in the country is concerned in several ways,” Hlongwane said.
“ First, he is building a sports village here, a high performance centre which is an integrated sport and recreation facility made up interventions in soccer,” he continued.
Magaya is building a 15000 seater stadium; building facilities for netball and volleyball. He is also building facility for aquatics and for horse racing. The minister commended the work that is being done by Magaya.
Prophetic, Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries leader Walter Magaya has reaffirmed his support for the development and growth of sport in the country.
