According to latest report Sportbrief received from Bulawayo, Highlanders Football Club announced they had parted ways with coach, Bongani Mafu, a decision some think was long overdue.
The source quoted the former Bosso coach saying , “Today my stay at Bosso as Technical Manager ended. I thank the boys for their effort and the supporters for their support. Coaching Bosso is a dream for any Coach from Bulawayo. I have lived my dream albeit without the necessary success. I have no regrets and will continue following the progress of this great institution.”
The Highlanders executive has resolved to fire head coach Bongani Mafu after a series of poor results that have left them on the verge of joining the relegation battle.
The defeat by FC Platinum and Whawha triggered calls for Mafu’s dismissal. The official said Sunday’s 2-3 loss to log leaders Chicken Inn was the last straw.
The official said Mafu should have been fired on Monday night, but the review meeting did not take place as the executive committee did not constitute a quorum. Club chairman Peter Dube and his deputy Mgcini Mpofu were attending a Supersport workshop in Harare while treasurer Donald Ndebele is out of the country and this left secretary-general Emmet Ndlovu and committee member Wisdom Mabhena as the only available executive committee members.
The executive immediately replaced the gaffer with well-travelled coach, Cosmas Zulu who will stir up the Highlanders ship on interim basis nd will be assisted by Amin Soma-Phiri and Melusi Sibanda. Vezigama Dlodlo is the new manager.
Mafu was fired together with his technical team of Mandla Mpofu, goalkeeping legend, Peter Nkomo and Netsai Moyo.
Bosso are sitting on position 10 on the log, with 25 points from 21 games, something that was unpalatable for the team’s executive.
