Reports say Highlanders Football Club have fired head coach Bongani Mafu. Sources say Mafu was handed his letter of dismissal this morning, while others said he had been given one more game to prove his worth.
There was widespread speculation that Mafu had been fired, but our sources say his fate depends on the result of the match against Chicken Inn to save his job.
Sources said Mafu was on his way out, but he had not been served his termination of contract papers as yet.
The sources said the coach who joined the team at the start of this season could find his way out of the team by the end of the week, as tension mounts at Bosso’s offices.
“He has not been served with papers yet,” the source said.
“The board is still to endorse the decision to either relieve him of his duties on keep him on.
“What I can tell you is that last night (Monday) he was told the next game is the most important for him.”
Speculation was rife on social media that Mafu had been relieved of his duties following two successive losses in the league.
He lost to FC Platinum 1-2 and was beaten by struggling WhaWha 0-1 on Sunday.
Bosso chief executive Ndumiso Gumede shot down speculation that Mafu had been fired, saying the Chicken Inn match was his last chance.
“The executive expressed their disappointment at the turn of events that the coach failed to meet his 10 match target and he was given another 10 matches and things got worse,” he explained.
“His performance in the next match is critical because if they fail to get a positive outcome the executive will be weighing their options on the way forward.”
Efforts to get a comment from the gaffer were fruitless as his mobile phone was off at the time of publishing this article. But Sportbrief will let you know of the developments around the future of Mafu.
